(EN) Citizens From Namtaeryeong Made Geoje Shipyard Into a Small Namtaeryeong

- Rainbow Shipyard created by subcontracted workers of Geoje, Tongyeong, Goseong shipyards and solidarity activist 'Wasp Citizens'

"We can't live like this, can we?" In June 2022, subcontracted workers at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (now Hanwha Ocean) Geoje Okpo Shipyard went on strike for 51 days, bringing the world's attention to the harsh plight of workers. However, the company hit them with a 47 billion won lawsuit for damages.
On December 23, donations poured in to the Geoje-Tongyeong-Goseong Shipbuilding Subcontracting Branch of the Metal Workers' Union, which had been holding overnight street protests and hunger strikes because they couldn't even set up a tent. These donations were received under names like "girl from Namtaeryeong," "person from Gyeonggi who couldn't go to Namtaeryeong," "poor business student," and "worker’s daughter.” In gratitude, the branch sent them invitations on social media, and 300 citizens from all over the country came.
“Wasp comrades,” solidarity activists who rush to the scene of struggle wherever it may be, built and launched a boat of hope called the “Solidarity Struggle Ship,” at the people’s assembly square for impeachment. They continue their solidarity struggle today at the site of the continuous high altitude protest camp of Branch President Kim Hyung-soo, who has climbed a 30-meter steel tower in front of the Hanwha Ocean headquarters.
