- "Is Spring Coming to Democratic Dongduk?" Solidarity Rally by Dongduk Women's University Student Union
On December 3, students at Dongduk Women's University occupied the school's main building after emergency martial law was declared. In the fall of 2024, students had protested the university's unilateral decision to become co-educational, demanding a democratic decision-making process instead. Students pointed that the real cause of this “financial” decision lies in the deep-rooted history of corruption and embezzlement within the system of this “private school foundation” against which they have been struggling for 20 years.
It was not easy for the students, who had suffered so much from the outside world demonizing them as "illegal rioters," to decide to come out of school. However, they decided that they could not turn away from protecting democracy within the larger society and participated in the impeachment square with the banner of “Democratic Dongduk.”
The citizens who met in the people’s square outside the school cheered and supported the students in their fight to bring back spring to a "Dongduk without Democracy." Having met countless solidarity citizens in the square and learned about the long history of struggle, Dongdeok Women's University's fight for bread and roses will not stop.
